This Initiative promotes the role of parents, especially mothers, in encouraging and supporting the education of their children and wards. Children who are supported by their parents in early school years tend to become more invested in learning. Such support boosts their morale and may improve their performance in school.

The nature and extent of support by a parent varies from home to home as conditions allow. In some homes, the parents may be busy in the day earning a living and would arrive home late at night. They therefore miss the chance of playing a supportive role in the lives and education of their children.

However a minimum level of parent support and involvement would yield better result. EduTrust team will work with school administration and relevant MDAs to achieve this through outreach, advocacy and sensitisation, and counselling for parents. Actions to be supported and promoted include:

• Punctuality to school
• Ensuring that children are neat and well dressed
• Assistance with homework where possible
• Periodic school visits by parents and one-on-one interaction with teachers
• Participation in Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings
• Following up with children’s performance, tests and exam results.

To get parents interested in doing these, incentives would be designed such as “Best supportive parent award”, other categories and consolation awards. Such award may come with funding a day out, excursion or trip for parent and child.
